Maku has not always been a watercolour artist. She originally started out as an acrylic artist before she moved to Melbourne.
Moving to Melbourne was Maku's first time out of home, and being poor and living in a flat with two other girls she turned to watercolour because it was cheap and easy to clean up.
It was here that she felt she finally felt her style and she fell in love with the medium.
Being able to paint anywhere means Maku's studio can be with her anywhere she finds inspiration. But for the most part her studio is at home with her family.
Maku never intended to create this label, it started at a point in her artistic career where she felt like she had nothing to lose. She was seeing all of these cool graphic tees online but they were either way too expensive or just not exactly what she after.
She did what any artist would do and decided she could just make her own. That was in 2024 of July and by December of that same year it was a fully fledged brand.
Actually looking back at Maku's life, and her decision to move to Melbourne with no family and no plan this turn of events was further proof that doing things the way she wanted to even when it probably didn't seem like the logical or right decision to make has always served her well.
The moment Maku knew the brand was taking off in the way it was she knew that this was finally her moment to do what she had always dreamed of and that was to build the brand of her a dreams.
A brand that celebrated colouring outside the lines, that didn't take itself too seriously and that could do things differently because it was lead by art and instinct not trends and numbers.
The creative direction of the brand has been one of Maku's favourite parts to take on, they feel almost like curating an exhibition.
Maku's vision for the brand is that it becomes a brand that is known for its roots in art and its passion for doing things other brands wont. We see the brand being a global brand and we have every intention of growing our categories because art is what set Maku's soul on fire.
